2008 marked the 75th Anniversary of the City of Grandville. The celebration took place over the September 12th weekend. We brought the community together and had the opportunity to dedicate the Lee Street Park. The weatherman played a bit of havoc on us, but we managed the ribbon cutting. In the afternoon some 500 people joined together in the fire station to celebrate. We need to give many thanks to that committee for putting the festivities together.

While growth has slowed in the southern portion of Grandville, this past year still provided us with the opportunity to welcome several new businesses. It was a pleasure to participate in the ribbon cutting at the new Flagstar Bank. In addition we had the opportunity to welcome the Texas Roadhouse to Grandville.

On September 24, 2008 we gathered at Calvin Crest Park to participate in a ribbon cutting ceremony as we added two new tennis courts, a new shelter, and a new entranceway into the park. This is a great addition to Calvin Crest Park. We are appreciative of the Calvin Christian School Board for their cooperation on this project

We were successful in completing a new fitness trail, which is located behind Central Elementary School, adjacent to Wedgwood Park. This is another joint effort between the City of Grandville and the Grandville Public Schools. It is a great addition to that park area. The trail is approximately a half mile long with four stations providing you with exercise opportunities.

The patience of our citizens over the past year as we moved through some substantial road improvements has been much appreciated. The resurfacing of 44th Street, between Rivertown Parkway and Wilson Avenue, was completed prior to the Fourth of July festivities and is a marked improvement. We also appreciated the work done on Rivertown Parkway and Canal Avenue. In the months ahead we will continue our local street improvement projects.

One other great improvement that is forthcoming will be the widening of the sidewalk over the Buck Creek at Canal. The wider sidewalk will certainly be a major improvement for those who walk, jog, and bicycle.

Let me close by expressing my thanks and those of the entire City Council to all of the volunteers who give of their time to help make Grandville a great place to live. These volunteers are certainly evident on all of our boards and commissions. They are also an integral part of our Michigan Week activities, our Memorial Day Services, our Flag Day Services, our Fourth of July Celebration and our Annual Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony. These are vivid examples of a community that works to provide a quality life for all of its citizens. We are extremely proud of Grandville.

Grandville is a vibrant and prosperous community. If you are passing through, we are glad you stopped. If you decide to stay, WELCOME!

Some History:

The Grandville library took its roots from a bookmobile service. In April of 1952, the Grandville community established its first library in the renovated quarters of the former pumping station on Maple Street. It then moved to the city hall complex. Today the Grandville branch of the Kent District Library resides just up the street from its first location.
