Picture the scene: a perfectly sunny spring day in downtown Grand Rapids. You grab your lunch and head out of the office for awhile to enjoy the warm weather in Rosa Parks Circle. You seat yourself next to the big Red Ball, take a first bite of sandwich, then pull out your tablet or phone … and connect.
Thanks to a 1-year deal between the Grand Rapids City Commission and Grand Rapids-based Internet service provider iserv, free public Wi-Fi access at Rosa Parks Circle – the popular downtown gathering spot for music, events, wintertime ice skating located at Monroe Avenue and Monroe Center NW – will soon be just another one of many great perks downtown Grand Rapids has to offer its residents and commuters. iserv previously provided free public Wi-Fi during ArtPrize, which nearly 10,000 visitors took advantage of, mainly for entering their online votes for best art piece – though with a full year’s worth of service now available, downtown dwellers will no doubt find plenty of different ways to utilize the free Wi-Fi.
Just remember, as with ANY public Wi-Fi service, connections are not necessarily as secure as they would be in the privacy of your own home or office, so be sure to exercise particular caution WHENEVER you’re on a public connection and know that it’s best to avoid doing any online banking, shopping or other activities that could expose your personal information, financial or otherwise, when connected to a public network.
The city will provide power for the service, and there will be no fee to the city. So get yourself downtown this year and get connected, with free W-Fi at Rosa Parks Circle!
