Forbes, a leading source for business news and financial information, referenced the city of Grand Rapids’ many major recent public-private funding projects in downtown such as the Van Andel Arena, DeVos Place and the Medical Mile along with numerous revitalization redevelopments in the Heartside neighborhood (check out Marketplace Makeover Coming to Grand Rapids this Summer!) in its article released on March 25, 2013.
The list, which is not competitively ranked, also names Cleveland, Cincinnati and Detroit as emerging cities.
While this is the third time Grand Rapids has been ranked by Forbes magazine (following last April’s ‘No. 1 City in the Country for Raising a Family’ and one of January’s ‘Top 10 Happiest Cities for Workers’ rankings), it is the first time our downtown has been specifically highlighted. While those of us who live and work right in the heart of downtown are certainly proud of this latest recognition, we also feel as if perhaps the term “emerging” isn’t quite strong enough to accurately convey the atmosphere of excitement, possibility and promise that’s been swirling through the streets of downtown Grand Rapids in recent months. After all, with the downtown condo market inventory being as scarce as it is and new mixed residential-retail housing and apartment rental projects being erected as we type this, for those of us down here at ground-level looking up, it looks as if Downtown Grand Rapids is on the verge of a wonderful explosion!
